Many transmissions have their own individual quirks and the 68RFE is a great example. Often a rebuild is a better option than a replacement but not every shop knows how to do it right. This unit has peculiarities that require special attention. If not done right, it could destroy itself in a short period of time. Which shop you choose to do the work could make a big difference.

The 68RFE transmission was introduced in 2007 with the Ram truck line. There's a record of Dodge 3500 and 2500 6.7L flywheel failures, flexplate failures, intermediate housing failures, often due to metal fatigue.

A flexplate is like a spring that allows the torque converter to move during operation, preventing alignment problems between the converter and transmission.

Under load, the torque converter presses against the flexplate, bending it slightly toward the engine. So, as you’re driving, the converter and flexplate are moving back and forth as the load changes. Over time, this can cause metal fatigue that will weaken the flexplate; similar to bending a piece of wire back and forth until it breaks. Much like a garage door spring: they work fine until they snap.

One indicator of a cracked flexplate is a sharp high-pitched scraping sound as you accelerate, particularly from a stop. Usually, this noise is enough to alert the driver before a complete failure occurs. Hopefully, the noise is annoying enough that the truck will be taken to a shop and the flexplate will be replaced before it fails completely.
